What’s involved in Surf Sports?

Senior Surf Sport provides surf lifeguards with the opportunity to test their abilities across a range of disciplines, including:

  • Surf swimming

  • Ski paddling

  • Board paddling

  • Ironperson

  • Pool rescue skills

  • Beach running

  • Beach flags

Athletes can train and compete across all the Surf Sports disciplines or choose to specialise in one.

We provide a comprehensive training program throughout the year for our Senior Sport athletes. Athletes can attend as many training sessions per week as fits in with their other commitments.

To find out more about our Surf Boat or Surf Canoe athletes, see the Surf Boats and Surf Canoe page, or if you’re interested in competing as a Master, check out the Masters Sport page.

Our winter training programme gives our athletes the opportunity to refine their ski paddling skills and build their aerobic fitness.  These sessions are usually held in a sheltered bay in the Wellington Harbour:

    Tuesday/Thursday - 5:30pm to 7pm

    Sunday - 4pm to 5:30pm

  • Pool Rescue Training

Over winter we provide pool training for athletes wanting to practise their mannequin, obstacles and fin skills.

The training times and location vary each year depending on availability of pool lanes;  please contact our administrator for more information.

Session times and location can vary because of holidays, wild Wellington weather and competitions, so please get in touch to confirm the current training times and location.

Surf Sport Competitions

Our Senior Surf athletes compete at a range of local, regional and national events over the summer period. Unlike other sports, the purpose of our competitions is to improve lifesaving skills to keep our beaches safe. These competitions vary slightly from year to year, but generally we compete at:

  • Local, Regional and National Pool Rescue Competitions

  • Local ‘Whitehorse’ events and Capital Coast Champs

  • Mount Monster

  • Central Regional Champs
